Pariah, MO the Graphic Novel

Ok boys and girls, have you seen this press release?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ventura Man Uses Kickstarter to Realize His Dreams

Ventura, California – November 25, 2012 – Doing something creative that you love is a challenge.  Finding an audience for your work and getting paid for it is even harder.   Andres Salazar understands those struggles.  Andres is a stand-up comedian,  has directed and produced short films, written screenplays even sells his paintings at craft fairs.  Most recently Andres has turned to the crowdfunding website, Kickstarter.com to find an audience and realize his dream of being a creator.

His latest project is a graphic novel titled Pariah, Missouri--a western/horror story set in pre-civil war.  He has a love for Missouri, in particular St Joseph.  He wrote it after traveling to St Joseph multiple times for business.  “I pitch it as Deadwood meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with less camp.  St Joseph is ripe with great history, I loved the people and town and I thought it would be a perfect setting for Pariah,” says Andres.

“When I conceived Pariah, I wanted something that I could tell graphically since comics have been my love as a kid.  It’s much cheaper of course to generate a comic and this is a good way to build a fanbase,” says Andres.  Creating a comic book is not without it’s challenges, an artist needed to be found so Andres turned to sites such as Deviantart.com to find affordable and dependable artists.

“That was a challenge.  I mean, I could have drawn it myself, but comic book art takes an incredible amount of time, plus there is value in adding others creative juices to the mix.  I was lucky to find a great artist like Jose,” says Andres.  Jose Luis Pescador is no stranger to the comic book world.  He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and has worked on a number of independent graphic novels and has shown fine art in galleries across the country.

His super-team was assembled, but Andres still needed funding.  Enter Kickstarter.com  Kickstarter is a new phenomenon in what is dubbed crowdfunding which gives creators a chance realize their ambitions by asking others to “back” their project.  From films, music albums to food, Kickstarter generates hundreds of projects daily in the hopes that they meet their funding goal.  If the goal is achieved, backers then receive rewards according to their pledge amount.

Having worked for Howard Chaykin as an assistant, Andres learned much of the business from his mentor.  Andres also wrote and directed SAG short film After Cheri and stated , “We are very excited about our Kickstarter for Pariah, Missouri!  It will be an exciting story for the next 30 days to see how we progress through the campaign.  I will be posting videos and updates often so backers really get a sense of the “behind the scenes” of what it takes to make a comic book.  Please check us out.”

You can find Andres Salazar in front of his laptop furiously typing away here in Ventura at a coffee shop near you.

What elements of CoKs will the TV show not do?

[Book Spoiler](/b "your text")
SPOILER for BOOK TWO : CLASH OF KINGS

Lets talk a little bit about some of the things that happen in Book two that HBO will just not do.

Here's a quick run down on elements to characters or plot that I think the HBOtv show will NOT cover:

1. At the end of book 2, Tyrion gets seriously jacked up, burned and loses a nose. I doubt HBO will have their lead character disfigured in in serious make-up all the time. I predict a small limp and cane, that will be it.

2. The Hound and Sansa. I doubt we will see on the show the last scene of the Hound, drunk at Sansa's chambers asking for that song and kiss.

3. Will we see Theon kill those farmer's kids that everyone thought were Bran and Rickton? Heads with tar on the pikes... if they were adults , maybe, but kids? I doubt it.

4. Will we see the Goat chopping feet and makeing stumps? This one we actually might see, not sure, there seems to be tons in Harrenhall that I bet will need to get cut down.

What do you think?

Green Lantern Review

Green Lantern. Let me start off by saying that I have been reading comics since I was about 8 or so, and Green Lantern next to Batman has been my favorite from DC Comics, so of course I’m going into this movie with some hope that I will be entertained. I went with my wife, who knows nothing of Green Lantern (although she did attend the Green Lantern cartoon panel at Comic-Con this year, so that she could get in the Falling Skies panel). I’ve heard some press and disappointment at the box office, but I have stayed away from many of the trailers and not listened to any reviews from TRS, /Filmcast or the like.
I’ll start off by saying that we saw the 3-D version, it’s playing at the cheap $3 theater (hey I’m too cheap to pay $12) and while I’ve heard about the screen being too dark in 3-D movies I haven’t experienced it when I saw Up or Caroline, I did with this. It was just dark enough that I was wishing we saw it in 2D, in fact the 3D was almost non-existent. There literally was more 3D in the Captain America trailer than this (which I realized how much I missed after watching it, due to me falling asleep the time we saw it in the theater…. yes I’m a biscuit, but it was a long day and a late show and I fell asleep)
As for the movie, I liked it. Again I haven’t read the press, but I felt it was actually maybe a little better than Thor. I definitely liked X-Men First Class better, but I thought that Green Lantern was good. Reynolds was good, I thought he matched the character of Hal, fit the part, both physically and had the charisma that I expect for a movie like this. Lively was fine, she didn’t have too much to work with, but I enjoyed her as well… if the talent hits their mark and doesn’t distract from the movie, that’s good enough in most cases. I thought the plot was good, but I’ll get more into that in a bit.
Biscuit-nerd time: Okay, now I’ll throw a few things out there that I felt were a little weak. Kilawog was a little disappointing… I know you people love to hear Michael Clarke Duncan (I still havne’t forgiven him for taking the role of Kingpin) but just making him a drill sergeant, didn’t do it for me. Kilawog has a heart, but maybe there was no time for that in this story, and I can accept that. Despite my history with the comics, I didn’t have much exposure to Hector Hammond. I thought the arc and acting was good, but didn’t know the character well enough for me to be that invested. Parallax was interesting, I liked the design, thought all that was fine, would have probably liked more of a sci-fi adventure off Earth better, but that might be a better movie #2. Loved the Sinestro stuff, and wouldn’t it be fun if in movie #3 Hal becomes Parallax and destroys Coast City?
Good movie. Liked it. Three Biscuits. Go check it out and tell me what you think!

Craigslist is a Biscuit

You know when a valuable tool becomes useless all you want to do is throw it away, but you keep it around just in case you get desperate enough to go back to it, well for me that is Craigslist.
Like ebay, Craigslist was originally amazing and I used it for both finding actors for After Cheri and to sell/buy things. But honestly, I have been on this stinking Craigslist for like 2 hours and went through only 3 days worth of posts in the jobs section. To wade through the 70% "hot models wanted" and actually find something worth noting, is just not the best use of time. But that possibility of finding something awesome, is there in my mind, so I can't completely not use the site. Lets face it Craigslist is a Biscuit website, it is losing its usefulness.
Once something is discovered to have value and be of benefit, everyone and their brother jumps on it and floods it with thier scams and riuns it for everyone. Just like Myspace, people become infatuated with it, and with the masses using loses its functionality. Watch out Facebook and Twitter, your next!
