Green Lantern Review

Green Lantern. Let me start off by saying that I have been reading comics since I was about 8 or so, and Green Lantern next to Batman has been my favorite from DC Comics, so of course I’m going into this movie with some hope that I will be entertained. I went with my wife, who knows nothing of Green Lantern (although she did attend the Green Lantern cartoon panel at Comic-Con this year, so that she could get in the Falling Skies panel). I’ve heard some press and disappointment at the box office, but I have stayed away from many of the trailers and not listened to any reviews from TRS, /Filmcast or the like.
I’ll start off by saying that we saw the 3-D version, it’s playing at the cheap $3 theater (hey I’m too cheap to pay $12) and while I’ve heard about the screen being too dark in 3-D movies I haven’t experienced it when I saw Up or Caroline, I did with this. It was just dark enough that I was wishing we saw it in 2D, in fact the 3D was almost non-existent. There literally was more 3D in the Captain America trailer than this (which I realized how much I missed after watching it, due to me falling asleep the time we saw it in the theater…. yes I’m a biscuit, but it was a long day and a late show and I fell asleep)
As for the movie, I liked it. Again I haven’t read the press, but I felt it was actually maybe a little better than Thor. I definitely liked X-Men First Class better, but I thought that Green Lantern was good. Reynolds was good, I thought he matched the character of Hal, fit the part, both physically and had the charisma that I expect for a movie like this. Lively was fine, she didn’t have too much to work with, but I enjoyed her as well… if the talent hits their mark and doesn’t distract from the movie, that’s good enough in most cases. I thought the plot was good, but I’ll get more into that in a bit.
Biscuit-nerd time: Okay, now I’ll throw a few things out there that I felt were a little weak. Kilawog was a little disappointing… I know you people love to hear Michael Clarke Duncan (I still havne’t forgiven him for taking the role of Kingpin) but just making him a drill sergeant, didn’t do it for me. Kilawog has a heart, but maybe there was no time for that in this story, and I can accept that. Despite my history with the comics, I didn’t have much exposure to Hector Hammond. I thought the arc and acting was good, but didn’t know the character well enough for me to be that invested. Parallax was interesting, I liked the design, thought all that was fine, would have probably liked more of a sci-fi adventure off Earth better, but that might be a better movie #2. Loved the Sinestro stuff, and wouldn’t it be fun if in movie #3 Hal becomes Parallax and destroys Coast City?
Good movie. Liked it. Three Biscuits. Go check it out and tell me what you think!

Craigslist is a Biscuit

You know when a valuable tool becomes useless all you want to do is throw it away, but you keep it around just in case you get desperate enough to go back to it, well for me that is Craigslist.
Like ebay, Craigslist was originally amazing and I used it for both finding actors for After Cheri and to sell/buy things. But honestly, I have been on this stinking Craigslist for like 2 hours and went through only 3 days worth of posts in the jobs section. To wade through the 70% "hot models wanted" and actually find something worth noting, is just not the best use of time. But that possibility of finding something awesome, is there in my mind, so I can't completely not use the site. Lets face it Craigslist is a Biscuit website, it is losing its usefulness.
Once something is discovered to have value and be of benefit, everyone and their brother jumps on it and floods it with thier scams and riuns it for everyone. Just like Myspace, people become infatuated with it, and with the masses using loses its functionality. Watch out Facebook and Twitter, your next!

Labor Day

In my effort to post everyday, I will post a quick note about my Labor day. We went out and played some Volleyball here in Ventura, got some good games in.
Oh, also watched a little of that show Fringe. Its pretty good. Think X-files by JJ Abrams.

Biscuit Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

Anyone who has been in love will appreciate the truth that is in this movie. I saw this yesterday and I must say I enjoyed the movie very much. While there are parts that are not the most original in the world (The debate that there are no more original stories left in the world, which is a mute one in my opinion is for a post for another day.) the heart-felt joy and sadness that is this movie makes it an experience. I really liked the movie Brick (mainly for the dialog and genre-bending setting) and Joseph Gordon Levitt continues to give a great performance. While the lead actress, Zooey Deschanel gives a good performance, there is something about it that I can't abide. It's either that spacey-robotilike stare or maybe it's just the character, but the whole time I just couldn't figure out why she was the girl of Tom's dreams. Again, when you watch this movie you cant help but recall your own personal feelings/experiences with a break-up, which is a sign of a good movie.

Some of the best bits where the moments that we saw reality vs. expectations, and the art direction that would give it that classic indie style is so popular now. (See N. Dynamite and Juno for what I mean)

In the end, I say, go see it. Its heart-felt and well acted/directed. Not as funny as you might think but if a movie has the Smiths in the soundtrack, you automatically get a thumbs up from me.
