Green Lantern Review

Green Lantern. Let me start off by saying that I have been reading comics since I was about 8 or so, and Green Lantern next to Batman has been my favorite from DC Comics, so of course I’m going into this movie with some hope that I will be entertained. I went with my wife, who knows nothing of Green Lantern (although she did attend the Green Lantern cartoon panel at Comic-Con this year, so that she could get in the Falling Skies panel). I’ve heard some press and disappointment at the box office, but I have stayed away from many of the trailers and not listened to any reviews from TRS, /Filmcast or the like.
I’ll start off by saying that we saw the 3-D version, it’s playing at the cheap $3 theater (hey I’m too cheap to pay $12) and while I’ve heard about the screen being too dark in 3-D movies I haven’t experienced it when I saw Up or Caroline, I did with this. It was just dark enough that I was wishing we saw it in 2D, in fact the 3D was almost non-existent. There literally was more 3D in the Captain America trailer than this (which I realized how much I missed after watching it, due to me falling asleep the time we saw it in the theater…. yes I’m a biscuit, but it was a long day and a late show and I fell asleep)
As for the movie, I liked it. Again I haven’t read the press, but I felt it was actually maybe a little better than Thor. I definitely liked X-Men First Class better, but I thought that Green Lantern was good. Reynolds was good, I thought he matched the character of Hal, fit the part, both physically and had the charisma that I expect for a movie like this. Lively was fine, she didn’t have too much to work with, but I enjoyed her as well… if the talent hits their mark and doesn’t distract from the movie, that’s good enough in most cases. I thought the plot was good, but I’ll get more into that in a bit.
Biscuit-nerd time: Okay, now I’ll throw a few things out there that I felt were a little weak. Kilawog was a little disappointing… I know you people love to hear Michael Clarke Duncan (I still havne’t forgiven him for taking the role of Kingpin) but just making him a drill sergeant, didn’t do it for me. Kilawog has a heart, but maybe there was no time for that in this story, and I can accept that. Despite my history with the comics, I didn’t have much exposure to Hector Hammond. I thought the arc and acting was good, but didn’t know the character well enough for me to be that invested. Parallax was interesting, I liked the design, thought all that was fine, would have probably liked more of a sci-fi adventure off Earth better, but that might be a better movie #2. Loved the Sinestro stuff, and wouldn’t it be fun if in movie #3 Hal becomes Parallax and destroys Coast City?
Good movie. Liked it. Three Biscuits. Go check it out and tell me what you think!
